Nest
In our red maple,
there is a nest of the usual twigs,
plastered with a label from a beer bottle
and woven through with blue ribbon.
A burst balloon dangles from one end.
It’s like a hat my mother once wore,
a turban with a plastic bird perched on top.
When that bird fell off, I almost expected it
to fly away, but never into my heart,
where it still flutters from time to time.
